Sand Stone Farms Rescue Effort

Anna and Paneki ( for adoption)
Sand Stone Farm's Rescue Effort is founded, directed and managed by Carolyn Sanders and it's directors and located in Ortonville, MI.

SSFRE's primary focus in helping horses, is to rescue them from their current at risk situations and find them new homes where they will be loved and can thrive. We seasonally purchase pregnant mares from kill buyer pens, auction and Craigslist as these are the places where they are most often in danger of shipping to slaughter.

SSFRE understands the need to avoid becoming overextended as well as the need to be able to properly maintain and care for all animals already in our care. We will help any horse in need if our resources and barn space will allow.

Sand Stone Farm's Rescue Effort is a registered Non Profit rescue in Mi, made up of a network of caring animal lovers who work together to save horses and ponies from neglectful and/or dangerous situations. So far, this has included slaughter bound, abandoned or neglected equines that have been for sale, trade or at auction. SSFRE takes special interest in helping at-risk mares who are in foal or with foal.

Upon entering the rescue program, each animal is carefully evaluated by our vet and farrier to assure the maximum care possible is given to help them regain their health and well-being. Each rescue animal is handled daily with respect, love and care. Not only do these neglected equines thrive when receiving this attention, it's possible they may never have had this before in their lives. This positive interaction helps SSFRE learn more about their personalities, which in turn aids us with home  placement when they are ready for adoption. No animal is ever put up for adoption until SSFRE is assured that they have recovered sufficiently, and will thrive in their new home.  All horses when ready for adoption will leave on a contract to help ensure they have a full safe life. This contract does not require a forever home but, must follow the horse into any new homes as well as keep SSFRE involved in any transfers of ownership and helping determine if new homes are a good fit.

Horses dumped?
November 21, 2012
Charlie speaks with returning guest, Horse Rescuer Carolyn Sanders of Sandstone Farms on Oakland County. This past Friday nearly a dozen were found in a warehouse in Detroit. What happens to horses when owners can no longer afford them? Can owners be tracked down? Just how big is the problem?

LET IT RIP Horse Meat: the other side of the story with SSFRE's Carolyn Sanders. December 5, 2011

Carlie's comments on Horse meat on Friday made some people really mad. In fact, he got some hate mail. So, Charlie has invited critic Carolyn Sanders of Sand Stone Farm Horse Rescue into the studio to debate the pros/cons of Horse meat. Sandstonefarm.info
